Luc Aubert, a lifelong lover and practitioner of trail running and ultra trail running, set up the Auvergne Trail Nature Team (Auvergne TNT) with a handful of other runners, which later became the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes Trail Nature Team. From the outset, the association has been affiliated to the French Athletics Federation, and is a member of ITRA and the Trail Runner Foundation.

In 2016, the decision was taken to organise a trail, but not just any trail, and not just to add another one to the various calendars... This one will give pride of place to the different places it crosses and, above all, will have as its watchword: "getting to know the region through our passion". The Grands Trails d'Auvergne was born the following year.

From 2017 onwards, the event will be showcasing an exceptionally wild region, a return to its origins that is sure to please some of the discipline's pioneers and newcomers alike. Since the birth of GTA, the event has changed a great deal, but the organisers want above all to preserve the atmosphere and conviviality that have made the event's reputation by putting the traileur's enjoyment at the centre of everything they do.
